Between 11 and 19 October, Brazilian experts participated in a technical exchange visit to Portugal and France, focusing on the protection of geographical indications as a rural development tool. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), the Brazilian Service to Support Micro and Small Enterprises (Sebrae) and the Brazilian Cachaça Institute (Ibrac) .
In Lisbon, the Brazilian delegation visited two companies with experience in Protected Geographical Indications (PGI): Apoma (soft eggs of Aveiro) and Orivárzea (Carolino Rice of the Ribatejo Plains). In Azeitão, they visited the Fernando Simões Cheesemakers, which have a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
In Paris, the group visited the Ministry of Agriculture. In Montpellier, they were in Oignon des Cécennes (onion producers), which also enjoy the status of Protected Designation of Origin - Appellation d'origine Protégée (AOP); in Miel des Cévennes (honey), with PGI in progress; and the wine cellar Mas de Saporta, which has Controlled Denomination of Origin - Appellation d'origine Contrôlée (AOC) -- of the Languedoc region.
This activity was sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra). The action was selected during the 7th call for participation under the Sector Dialogue on Agriculture and Rural Development.
The technical mission is part of an action that aims to promote the exchange of experiences and technical know-how of the regulations and policies related to Geographical Indication as a development tool. A study had been previously conducted of EU laws and public policies related to the issue as a rural development tool. An internal seminar was run for public and private agents, addressing the Brazilian and European legislations, as well as policies to foster GI-related issues.
Representing the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply in this mission were the head of the Division of Wine and Beverages, Mr Marlos Schuck Vincenzi; the coordinator for the development of geographical indications (GIs), Ms Beatriz de Assis Junqueira; the deputy head of the Division of Milk and Dairy Products Inspection, Mr Alexandre Gomes Fernandes; the head of the Division of Technical Standards for Animal Products Inspection, MsPriscilla Bagnatori Rangel; and agricultural federal inspectors Mr José Carlos Ramos, responsible for GI promotion, and Mr Fernando Fagundes, responsible for the inspection of animal products. Sebrae was represented by Ms Hulda Giesbrecht, from the Unit for Innovation and Technology Access; representing INPI was the general coordinator for GI and Registrations, Ms Lucia Regina Fernandes; and Ibrac was represented by its executive director, Mr Carlos Lima.
