The European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, by means of the action Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Inspection and Compliance Assessment System in the European Union and Brazil, sent four Federal Agriculture and Cattle Raising Inspectors from Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento - MAPA [Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply] to Germany and the United Kingdom, to learn about fresh fruit and vegetable control systems.
The following representatives took part in the technical mission: Karina Fontes Coelho Leandro, from the Departamento de Inspeção de Produtos de Origem Vegetal – DIPOV [Department for the Inspection of Plant Source Products], from MAPA, with headquarters in Brasília; Uellen Lisoski Duarte Collato, from Superintendência Federal de Agricultura – SFA [Federal Bureau of Agriculture] in Santa Catarina; Cesar Simas Telles, from the SFA in Rio de Janeiro; and Fernando Augusto Pereira Mendes, from the Sistema de Vigilância Agropecuária Internacional – VIGIAGRO [International Farming Surveillance System] of Foz do Iguaçu, in the state of Paraná.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply representatives participated in talks on the theme and had the opportunity to observe fruit and vegetable inspections at the Frankfurt Airport, in Germany, and at wholesale and retail markets in Frankfurt and in Birmingham, in the United Kingdom. The experience enabled them to improve their knowledge of the classification standards used for the fruit and vegetable trade in the European Union.
As Karina Fontes pointed out, “that was an important initiative in the sense that we are attempting to adjust the Brazilian legislation to the dynamics of trade and to procedures adopted in the international market. The goal is to increase the reliability of the services provided by the Brazilian inspection system and the quality of the products provided to domestic and foreign markets”.
