In search of new partnerships in the field of remote sensing, between 13 and 17 May the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) sent three of its civil servants on a technical mission to three European countries (the UK, the Netherlands and Italy), which included visits to institutions and renowned researchers in the field. The mission is part of an action provided for in the sixth call from the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility.
The delegation comprised Mr. Edson Sano, head of IBAMAs Centre for Remote Sensing, Mr. George Ferreira, IBAMA coordinator of environmental monitoring, and Mr. Gustavo Lazarini, an IBAMA environmental analyst. The three attended meetings at the University of Aberystwyth, Wales, at the University of Wageningen, in the Netherlands, and at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Union, in Ispra, Italy.
During the meetings, the Brazilian representatives identified several possibilities for cooperation with the European institutions, aiming at improving the monitoring of Brazilian forest cover and oil spills in the country. "We already have a technical cooperation project with Japan for monitoring deforestation in the Amazon by satellite imagery. Now, the idea is to establish similar partnerships with the European Community," said Mr. Edson Sano.
Next week, the IBAMA staff will receive the European researchers in Brazil. Initially, there will be a field visit to show them the cerrado biome and land use in this environment, which is earmarked for monitoring through EU-Brazil cooperation. Next, there will be a workshop to discuss research findings in remote sensing by both parties and finalise partnership proposals. "The results could hardly be more exciting," said Mr.Sano.
