The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) held on 30September, an afternoon of talks to exchange experiences on the transport of animals in Brazil and Europe. Held at Embrapa Studies and Training in Brasilia (DF), the event also promoted the presentation of the results of the Working Group (WG) for the standardization of the transport of live animals and the completion of the action supported by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra).
The event Transport of Live Animals, which applied good agricultural practices, was attended by about 80 people, including representatives from government agencies, representative bodies and companies in the food, agribusiness and transport and logistics sectors. The opening panel was composed by the representative of Delbra, Pedro Santos; the national director of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility at the MOPG, Ayrton Martinello; and the Secretary of Agriculture and Cooperative Development from MAPA, Caio Rocha.
Mr. Santos, counsellor for Delbra Economic and Business Affairs, highlighted the importance of the EU's dialogue with Brazil on this issue. "The ultimate goal of the project is to reach a consensus on animal welfare," he said.
Mr. Martinello commented on the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. The initiative, he stressed, is responsible for the progress and the deepening of the strategic partnership and bilateral relations between Brazil and the EU. "We already have 28 ministries and 20 European institutions involved," he emphasized.
Secretary of the SDC Caio Rocha commented that Brazil has been steadily evolving in legislation and procedures to ensure the welfare of animals and the safety of its products, always taking into account the recommendations of international bodies and new scientific knowledge: "This is a demand of the Brazilian society and import markets that we will mandatorily meet "he said.

International expert Mínguez Olga Gonzalez, hired by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility to gather information on the road transport of animals in Europe, presented the results of the work. Olga, who is head of the Animal Health Service of the General Directorate of Agricultural Production of the Board of Agriculture and Livestock of the Junta de Castilla y León, presented the panel Transport of livestock in Europe. Data and Surveillance. According to her, the European rule "states that animals are sentient beings." "European laws put the ethical responsibility of production first. Commercial quality is related to the welfare of live animals being transported,” she said.
Mirela Janice Eidt, servant of the Secretariat of Agricultural Protection (SDA) of the MAPA, reported the experience of learning in situ the European practices of monitoring, legislation and control of animal welfare during transport. She was on a mission to Spain with the support of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. Server Lizie Buss, from the Permanent Technical Committee on Animal Welfare of the MAPA, who also was on mission to Spain, spoke on the proposed regulations for transporting live animals.
Professor at UNESP Jaboticabal (SP) Paranhos Matheus Costa addressed the topic Animal welfare and situation of the transport of live animals in Brazil. He drew a picture on the current transport of animals. According to him, the greatest challenges of this issue for Brazil involve such factors as "poor road conditions, the lack of alternative routes and inadequate, poorly maintained equipment."
