From 6 to 13 September, three civil servants from Brazils National Supply Company (Conab) visited the headquarters of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, to exchange information on techniques to estimate agricultural productivity via satellite. The mission was funded by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra).
During the meeting, Conab representatives presented the key work developed by the company as well as expectations as to a future cooperation agreement with the JRC for the qualification of harvest estimates using geotechnology. The JRC shared its experience in the systematic use of agro-meteorological, phenological and soil data to support productivity estimates throughout the European community.
"The mission contributed to a better understanding of the European methodology for regional production forecasting, using agricultural growth models for crops such as corn, soybeans and wheat," said the agronomist Patricia Mauricio Campos, one of the participants in the mission. The European system of forecasting crop yields (Mars Crop), the statistical package (Cobo), the form of data calibration and the requirements of information technology to implement the Biome modeling platform were discussed.
According to Ms. Campos, a work plan was also established for 2015, which includes the publication, in the JRC newsletters, of productivity forecasts for the main crops in Brazil, with the assistance of Conab technical staff. "We thus hope to contribute to the smooth flow of agricultural information between Brazil and the European Union and the improvement of forecasting methodologies for Brazilian crops," she said.
At the same time, a project for the implementation of a system based on agro-meteorological crop monitoring and spectral parameters adapted to Brazil was consolidated. This project comprises a four-year implementation schedule and was drafted by the expert hired by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. In October, the projects main findings will be presented by the expert himself to Conabs Directorate of Agricultural Policy and Information.
