Two representatives of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) were in Lisbon at the end of April for an international symposium on intelligent energy networks (smart grids). The event brought together experts from several countries and was organised by the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) and the International Conference on Electricity Distribution (CIRED), both of which are bodies for global energy cooperation.
The development of smart grids as part of an energy system with a smaller environmental impact is the focus of cooperation between Brazil and the European Union. The participation of Brazilians in the symposium is part of an action provided for by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. MMAs Manager for Climate Change and Sustainability, Ms. Ana Lucia Dolabella, and the director for Technological Innovation of the Association of Proprietary Companies of Infrastructure and Private Telecommunications Systems (APTEL), Mr. José Gonçalves Vieira, represented Brazil at the event.
The Brazilian representatives met with the staff of the Joint Research Centre (JRC / EU) at the event and discussed pilot projects for smart grids in Europe and Brazil. They also discussed the role of these networks in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and presented the Brazilian programme for smart grids, coordinated by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC).
For Ms. Dolabella, their participation in the symposium was an opportunity to learn a little more about smart grids and find out what is happening around the world in this field. "At the event, we found that this technology is a challenge for the whole world. Brazil needs to monitor this closely, " she said. Ms Dolabella also noted that there is great interest on the part of the European Union - through the JRC - to further technical cooperation with Brazil in this field. "It was good to realise that other countries are also seeing the relationship between smart grids and climate change," she concluded.
As a result of this action, experts from the Joint Research Centre will come to Brazil in May to visit national smart grid projects and meet with Brazilian experts.
