Two representatives from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) were in Europe last May to exchange experiences with European partners regarding quality in intellectual property. The Institutes general quality coordinator, Mr. Luiz Otavio Beaklini, and division head, Ms. Renata Almeida, participated in the mission, which received backing from the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility.
In Spain, the Brazilians visited the headquarters of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), in Alicante. Then, in Madrid, they visited the Spanish Patents and Trademarks Office (SPTO), a national body. In Austria, a country of great tradition in the establishment of quality standards for intellectual property, the mission also visited the relevant national office. Finally, in Wales, they met with staff from the UKs Intellectual Property Office, which promotes various international exchange activities.
"These partners are renowned for their technical quality. We learnt the best know-how there is to be applied here in Brazil, "said Mr. Beaklini. "INPI is growing and wants to improve the quality of its work. We want to be among the best in the world," he says. According to the coordinator, the Institutes staff will now process the information brought from the EU and work on implementing a new internal quality standard.
During the mission, preliminary arrangements were made for European institutions to send technical staff to Brazil as a follow-through in the exchange, which is expected to occur between late 2013 and early 2014.
