The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), in partnership with the European Commission, the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, the Academia Brasileira da Ciência (ABC) [Brazilian Academy for Science], and Instituto Alberto Luiz Coimbra de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa de Engenharia (COPPE) [Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering] held the Workshop "Brazil-European Union Marine Research Cooperation", in Rio de Janeiro, on November 16-17th, 2015. The event counted on the participation of Brazilian and European experts and researchers.
As a result of the discussions and understandings which took place during the event, Celso Pansera, minister of Science, Technology and Innovation and Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Investigation, Science and Innovation, signed a joint memorandum of understanding to extend cooperation between Brazil and the European Union in oceanographic research with a focus on the Atlantic Ocean. “The execution of this document reinforces the partnership between governments, and it will certainly contribute to the development of scientific knowledge in this area”, pointed out Andrei Polejack, MCTI’s Coordinator for Ocean Sciences and Antarctica, also responsible for the action on Marine Research, supported by the Sector Dialogues Support Project.
In order to direct the projects to be developed, seven areas were listed as priority for bilateral cooperation: Transatlantic Ocean Observing and Forecasting System; food security, including aquaculture; conservation and sustainable use of the Atlantic biodiversity, with innovative features, such as biotechnology; ocean technology; ocean literacy; continent-ocean interactions, including the flow of nutrients; and polar research, particularly, interconnections between the Atlantic and Antarctica.
By virtue of this agreement, Brazil and the European Union now share information on activities developed in each area and discuss priorities for joint actions, which will make it possible to identify common challenges and goals, as well as opportunities for cooperation in the technical, scientific and logistic domains. Moreover, Brazilian and European researchers will carry out joint and complementary work in planning research activities and innovative processes to ensure synergy and prevent the unnecessary duplication of efforts. The partnership also provides for an exchange program for researchers and technicians whereby these professionals would visit Brazilian and European universities and research institutes.
