The Secretariat of Human Rights of the Presidency of the Republic (SDH) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra) jointly held the 3rd EU-Brazil Civil Society Seminar on Human Rights on 3 April, in Rio de Janeiro. The event was co-sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility and coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG). Representatives of civil society in Brazil and Europe took part in the seminar, which focused on Human Rights, Education and Sports.
The purpose of the event was to promote a constructive discussion on the issue of human rights, involving Brazilian and European organisations. Participants reported experiences related to the topic, discussed ways to incorporate human rights into the school curriculum and to use sports (especially major events like the Football World Cup) as a way to promote and respect economic, social and children's rights.
For the representative of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, Ms Karen Costa, this type of seminar is important as it enables a discussion with other countries, bringing in different views and experiences. "No country is isolated in the globalised world in which we live, so the exchange of information benefits everyone. Countries also benefit from comparing different experiences, so they don’t only focus on their difficulties, but are able that see them in a wider context", she said.
