Sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra), representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) attended the 4th Meeting of the BR-EU SPS Consultative Mechanism, in Brussels, Belgium, on the 2 June 2014. On the European side, members of the Directorates-General for Trade (DG Trade) and Health and Consumer Protection (DG Sanco) and of the Food and Veterinary Office (FVO).
The BR-EU SPS Consultative Mechanism aims to develop and coordinate mutual cooperation on sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, exchanging opinions and technical information to increase mutual understanding on issues that may affect trade in animals, plants and their products, within the limits of their respective legislations. It also aims to inform discussions on economic and trade matters within the scope of the current EU-Brazil Framework Agreement for Cooperation.
According to Mr Jesulindo Nery de Souza Júnior, coordinator of Europe and Mercosur Affairs of MAPA’s Department of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Negotiations, there was progress in the talks for Brazil to enable new areas (Rondônia, Tocantins and the Federal District) to export beef to the EU. "There were also signals of future changes in the requirements for Brazil’s citrus exports as well as the reopening of negotiations for requirements pertaining to glanders (infectious disease affecting horses) to comply with OIE norms," he said. The meeting also sealed the commitment between Brazil and the EU to promote communication and cooperation in the sanitary and phytosanitary safety of products of animal and vegetable origin.
