The European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, an initiative coordinated by the European Union Delegation to Brazil – DELBRA and the Ministério do Planejamento, Orçamento e Gestão – MP [Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management], held the workshop “Agri-environmental Indicators and Public Policies Management", which took place on April 25 and 26 in Brasília. The event presents the work program of an action of the same name coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), whose goal is to gather elements which will help build and assist in the management of a unified agri-environmental indicator system for the country.
At the opening of the seminar, the National Deputy Director for the Sector Dialogues Project, Giovana Rocha Veloso, spoke about the role and the scope of the initiative. “The Project aims at putting in place a cooperation effort between Brazil and the European Union by means of an exchange of knowledge. We have 70 actions in progress and they address 24 different issues, and they involve establishing partnerships with 29 Brazilian and 21 institutions from Europe”. She also praised the work carried out by the MMA. “The Ministry of the Environment is a long-standing partner, and an active one. It has already carried out 29 actions and is currently involved in six”.
The Secretary for Exploration and Sustainable Rural Development at MMA, Carlos Mário Guedes, highlighted the importance of agri-environmental indicators to establishing a balance between agriculture and the environment. “These parameters will help us improve our sustainability policies”, he said. The Coordinator for Sustainable Handling of Production Systems of the Secretariat for Farmers and Cooperatives of the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento - MAPA [Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply], Elvison Nunes Ramos, added that, in addition to supporting public policies, the national agri-environmental indicator system will guide farmers in the area of sustainable agriculture.
Concerned with the applicability of the parameters, Rodrigo Afonso Guimarães, Strategic Management Advisor for the Department for Family Farming of the Ministério do Desenvolvimento Agrário - MDA [Ministry of Agrarian Development], said that it is essential to systematize agri-environmental indicators to raise the sector’s awareness of the relevance of protecting the environment. “For managers and farmers it is very important to obtain concrete data on the effectiveness of sustainable practices”.
Rodrigo Gonçalves Sabença, Environment Analyst and Advisor to the MMA and operating officer for this action, informed that the results of the studies carried out by the experts, the knowledge obtained during the mission to Europe in March and the recommendations collected throughout the seminar will be used when preparing the proposal for the national agri-environmental indicator system. “We believe that the proposal will be consolidated by December, because prior to announcing it, we intend to analyze the data from the agri-environmental indicator system geared towards Latin America, which is being built by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)”.
