Brasilia hosted the Regional Development Week from 18 to 22 March, bringing together in a large meeting the activities of the First National Conference on Regional Development Commission and the 3rd Conference on Development (CODE). Organised by the Ministry of National Integration (MI) in partnership with the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA), the event brought together many representatives from government, civil society, academia and the business sector with the aim of finalising proposals and guidelines for the new National Policy for Regional Development (PNDR), to be submitted to the National Congress, as well as discussing the social and economic development of the country as a whole.
Several roundtables, lectures, meetings and other activities were held. Among them, the International Seminar on Regional Policy in the Global Context - Current Situation and Prospects, which had the participation of guest speakers sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. The seminar presented a study conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on Brazilian regional development, and promoted a debate on universal access to water, regional policies in Brazil and the European Union, the impacts of the global crisis on these policies, the influences of the financial system, technological developments and the university on regional development and Latin American experiences in the field.
"The seminar was a synthesis of several international cooperation initiatives for regional development and showed the wealth of topics that it comprises" said Ms. Laís Braga Cordeiro, manager of the MI Secretariat for Regional Development and one of the event organisers. "This wealth [of topics] will provide continuity to the ideas presented," she added.
The event also served to launch Brazils bid to host the 2014 edition of the Global Conference of Regional Studies Association (RSA), an event that seeks to build global "knowledge networks" through regional discussions, subconferences, advice and innovation. If Brazil wins the nomination, this will be the first time the RSA Global Conference takes place in South America.
Another highlight was the Development Film Festival, which screened productions addressing the theme of Brazilian development in the social, economic, environmental, and cultural spheres, among others.
"The week as a whole was very successful, as we left with tangible results", said the director of Regional Development Policy Management, of the MIs Regional Development Secretariat, Ms, Adriana Melo Alves. "We started with a reflection sparked in 2012 with the regional stages of the conference and discussed the terms of the new PNDR. Also very important was the signing of a declaration of intent to create a Latin American network for regional development, " she concluded.
