On 28 and 29 May, the Ministry of Cities (MCID) organised the Second International Workshop on Brazil - EU Metropolitan Policy. Held on the campus of the Caixa University, in Brasilia, the event was backed by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility.
Representatives from several federal agencies were in attendance to continue the discussions started in Workshop I, last November, involving studies on metropolitan planning and management conducted by MCID in partnership with the European Union. The objective of this effort is to delineate the scope of a substitute for the Bill of Law No. 3460, 2004, known as the Statute of the Metropolis. For this reason, Congressman Mr. Zezéu Ribeiro (PT-BA), the rapporteur of the bill in the House of Representatives, was also present.
"This partnership, enabled by the Sector Dialogues Support Facility, was very important in providing input from the European experience to this debate," said the MCID geographer and workshop organizer, Mr. Nathan Oliveira. According to him, there have been important advances in understanding the key points of the Statute, such as the focus on public policies for urban development. "Now, we will work on a report outlining the discussions during the workshop and what the Ministrys stance is towards these proposals," said Mr. Oliveira.
